Many problems manifesting later in a tree’s life can be traced back to the time of planting. Choose a tree that is appropriate for the planting site (e.g., do not plant Birch trees in shade or an Oak in the middle of the heavily irrigated lawn). Take into consideration the future size of the tree and the spread of its roots. Location, soil conditions, and climate should be considered in choosing a tree. Common causes of poor plant establishments are planting too deep, and under- or over-watering.
